Purchase String Quartet - About
The Purchase String Quartet formed at Purchase College Conservatory of Music in 2015. In the short time since their formation, the quartet has performed in a masterclass with renowned violinist Ani Kevafian and at the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center with violinist Sean Lee. With a particular interest in performing the quartet literature of the twentieth century, the group has delved deeply into the works of Shostakovich and Bartok. Principal coaches include Julia Lichten and Carmit Zori.
Emily Javarone was introduced to the violin at the age of six and studied with Nancy Holland and Yowcan Chen until she began her college career. Emily recently graduated Summa Cum Laude with a bachelor’s degree in violin performance from The University of Northern Colorado and studied with Richard Fuchs and Jubal Fulks. During her time there she was concertmaster of the University Orchestra, and appeared as a soloist with the University Orchestra in 2014 and 2016. She was also the winner of the UNC concerto competition and the Southard Competition in 2015. Emily is currently pursuing her master’s degree in violin performance at Purchase Conservatory, and studies with Deborah Buck, the first violinist of the renowned Lark Quartet.
Born and raised in Rhode Island, violinist Cami Sylvia began her studies at the age of ten. A recipient of the full-tuition Helen Forman Special Talents Scholarship, she received her Bachelor of Music Performance degree from Rhode Island College (RIC) and studied with John Sumerlin. Ms. Sylvia is currently pursuing her Master of Music degree at SUNY Purchase Conservatory. While a student at Purchase, she has led the Purchase Symphony Orchestra under guest conductor Roger Nierenberg. Ms. Sylvia studies on scholarship with Deborah Buck.
Katharine Dryden, violist, began her musical studies in her hometown of Buffalo, New York. As a chamber musician, she is a founding member of the Puck Quartet, with whom she has participated in masterclasses with members of the Brentano, American, Tokyo, and Miro Quartets and the Decoda Chamber Ensemble. In 2015, the Puck Quartet was personally selected by Robert Mann to participate in the Robert Mann String Quartet Institute at the Manhattan School of Music. Dryden has also performed in master classes with Kim Kashkashian and Ani Kavafian, and has attended several festivals including the Manchester Music Festival and the Beethoven Institute at Mannes. Dryden holds a BA in molecular, cellular and developmental biology from Yale and is completing a degree in viola performance at Purchase College, SUNY where she currently studies with Deborah Buck.
Alana Shannon, cellist, is originally from San Francisco, and earned both a Bachelor’s
degree and Performer Diploma from Indiana University under the tutelage of Peter
Stumpf. As an orchestral musician, she has participated in the Round Top International Music Festival and the National Orchestral Institute, and performed
throughout the United States in venues such as Davies Symphony Hall and Carnegie
Hall, and throughout the UK, Italy, Austria, and the Czech Republic as a member of the San Francisco-based Villa Sinfonia Orchestra. She has also had the privilege of working on chamber music under the guidance of Janos Starker, Andre Watts, and the Pacifica Quartet, among others, and has participated in masterclasses with Ani Kavafian, Zuill Bailey, and Robert DeMaine. Alana is currently working towards earning her Master’s degree at Purchase College, SUNY under the tutelage of Julia Lichten.
